Central Antiques Furniture Store Closing Sale: A Record of Appraisal and Recovery of Late Qing Dynasty and Republican Era Silver Dollars and Mexican Silver Dollars in Bulk

When dealing with coin collection and recycling, occasionally we receive "big orders"—not referring to particularly high monetary value, but rather large quantities, diverse varieties, and the need for individual classification and appraisal. Mr. Leung's case was one such instance.

Mr. Leung, fifty-eight years old, has operated an antique furniture store on Hollywood Road in Central for over twenty years. In recent years, with the shrinking antique furniture market and continuously rising rents, he decided to close down the business. During the clearance process, he found an iron biscuit tin hidden in a secret compartment of a zitan wood cabinet. Inside were more than a dozen old silver coins, each wrapped in cotton paper.

"I acquired this cabinet more than ten years ago, and it had never been sold. I didn't even know it had a secret compartment," Mr. Leung said with a laugh, adding that the price he paid for the cabinet back then might have been less than the value of the silver coins inside.

The fourteen silver coins laid out showed the following distribution by type:

Total Valuation of the Lot

  • "Fatman" Dollars (5 pieces) subtotal: HK$29,500
  • Guangxu Yuanbao (4 pieces) subtotal: HK$18,200
  • Mexican Eagle Dollars (3 pieces) subtotal: HK$6,800
  • Sun Yat-sen "Small Head" Dollars (2 pieces) subtotal: HK$5,400
  • Grand Total: HK$59,900

Mr. Leung confirmed on the spot. He mentioned that this money would be just enough for the severance pay after closing his business. "After collecting antique furniture for twenty years, in the end, a tin of silver coins from under the table helped me close up shop."

Common FAQs
