Tseung Kwan O's Ah Ming found his father's 1997 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin while tidying up the house: The complete gold coin recycling process
The logic behind recycling gold coins and gold ornaments is different. Gold ornaments are weighed and their purity tested; however, investment-grade gold coins (Bullion Coins) have internationally recognized face values, gold content, and purity standards, making their valuation more transparent. The problem is that many people cannot distinguish between a "gold coin" and a "gold medallion" in their possession—the recycling price for the two can differ by 5-10%.
Ah Ming, 36, lives in Tseung Kwan O and works in property management. His father bought several gold items when he was in business years ago, and Ah Ming never organized them after his father passed away. Recently, due to the high tuition fees for his eldest son's international school application, he finally opened his father's old safe—and found three gold coins protected in their original plastic cases.
"I only know they're gold, but I don't know which country they're from or their purity," Ah Ming WhatsApped a picture.

Quotation and Transaction
The recycling price of investment-grade gold coins = International gold price × gold content × weight ± brand premium. Maple Leaf and Kangaroo coins are among the most liquid gold coin varieties globally and can command a slight premium (1-2% higher than pure gold bars) when recycled. Panda gold coins have an additional premium in the collectors' market.
- Maple Leaf Gold Coin (1 oz 9999): HK$22,800
- Kangaroo Gold Coin (1 oz 9999): HK$22,800
- Panda Gold Coin (1 oz 999): HK$23,500 (includes collector's premium)
- Total: HK$69,100
After confirming the transaction, Ah Ming said that this money was just enough for the first installment of the international school tuition deposit. "My father bought these gold coins back then, and now they're helping his grandson with his studies; he would be so happy to know."
