The 1932 (Republic of China Year 21) silver dollar featuring Sun Yat-sen's portrait and a sailing ship with three birds on the reverse, commonly known as the "Three Birds Coin," features a profile portrait of Sun Yat-sen in civilian attire on the obverse, with the inscription "Republic of China Year 21" above. The reverse depicts a two-masted sailing ship sailing at sea, with a rising sun to the right and three seabirds flying above. Shortly after its release, rumors circulated that the rising sun on the right side of the sailing ship symbolized Japan (as the Japanese flag is the Rising Sun Flag), and the three birds alluded to Japanese bombers. Coinciding with the Japanese invasion of China, anti-Japanese sentiment was high, and the coin was considered detrimental to national dignity and an ominous symbol. In response to public opinion, the Nationalist government quickly recalled the coin and ceased its use, subsequently modifying the design by removing the rising sun and three birds, and preparing to re-mint it. However, by the time the new coin molds were completed in 1933, the mint changed the year on the obverse of the mold from "Year 21" to "Year 22" and reissued it. This is the more common 1933 sailing ship one-yuan silver dollar coin we see today.
