999 gold ring: construction, fineness and weight

FeatureWhat to establish
Object typering
Structure to photographInner hallmark, shank, solder seam, setting and any distortion.
Measurements and weightRing size, shank width and thickness, and gross weight without packaging.
Separate componentsIdentify stones, settings or replacement parts only where they are actually present.
Purity boundaryThe 999 claim needs confirmation from the actual mark and appropriate testing. Ring colour and size do not establish purity; measured gross weight, tested fineness, confirmed gold weight and the appraisal-date reference price must remain distinct.

Inspecting the 999 gold ring without alteration

Construction and joins: Photograph the complete circle, inner and outer shank, soldered joint, shoulders and any setting. Show thinning, resizing, cracks and flattened areas without polishing the inner surface or cutting the ring.

Dimensions and scale: Record ring size, shank width, thickness and gross weight with the units visible. If the ring is misshapen, show the distortion and do not force it onto a sizing mandrel for a round reading.

Separate materials: Identify a stone, setting, insert or replacement part only when present. Packaging stays off the scale, while any possible non-gold component remains a question until it can be tested or weighed reliably.

Reading the ring from hallmark to setting

Inner hallmark: Take one oriented inner-circle view that shows where the mark sits, then add magnified images of every legible character and nearby solder or wear.

Shank and resize seam: Use soft raking light around the full shank to reveal thinning, cracks, added metal, old sizing work and changes in polish without cleaning them away.

Setting or plain shoulders: If a setting is present, show its joins and any loose element; if the ring is plain, photograph both shoulders and their symmetry rather than assuming a missing stone.

Do not resize or polish before review

Keep the ring dry and in its current shape. Protect a loose setting in a small labelled container and avoid chemical tests on a visible face before the existing hallmark and surface are documented.

Ring testing and weighing guidance

For the wider assessment sequence, consult Gold and Jewellery and read Gold Handover: Itemised Weights and Non-Gold Components. The ring's own mark, construction and scale image still control the enquiry.

Questions before an appraisal

What should you check before selling?

What matters depends on the item. Photograph both sides, the edge, hallmarks or base marks, and any damage. Include the original box, certificate or weight information where relevant so we can decide whether an in-person inspection is needed.

Questions sellers often askOpen a question to read the answer

Which parts of a 999 gold ring should be photographed?

Show the full ring, inner hallmark, shank, solder or resize seam, shoulders, setting and any distortion. Include ring size, shank thickness and a clear scale reading.

Does a 999 stamp prove the ring's purity?

No. The mark should be photographed and supported by appropriate testing. Colour, size and gross weight cannot replace a fineness result.

Should a bent ring be rounded or resized first?

No. Keep its current shape and document the deformation. Forcing it onto a mandrel can worsen cracks, disturb an old seam or loosen a setting.
