Can gold jewellery be considered without a receipt?

Yes. The assessment principally uses weight and fineness; documents may assist but are not the only consideration.

Is there a large deduction for broken or old-fashioned gold jewellery?

Gold content is calculated from fineness and net weight. Age or breakage may not change fineness, but the item still needs to be checked in its present condition.

Are gold coins valued only at the gold price?

Not always. Investment coins may track gold closely, while commemorative or scarcer gold coins can also carry collector demand.

How can pure gold and 18K gold be distinguished?

Begin with the hallmark: 999 or 9999 denotes high-fineness gold, while 750 or 18K denotes 18-carat gold. The item may still require testing.

How is the day’s reference gold price calculated?

It is converted from the international gold price and the day’s exchange rate into Hong Kong dollars per tael or gram. The calculation should state the reference price, fineness and net weight separately.
