Gu Jin Jian Bao provides identification guides for silver dollars, older Renminbi, porcelain, gold and stamps, and welcomes enquiries from owners considering a sale. Photographs can establish the type of item, reveal missing views and show which physical details matter to a valuation.

A photograph cannot replace an examination in hand and does not establish authenticity. Paper repairs, coin edges, concealed porcelain cracks, gold fineness and stamp gum may require additional views before the next step can be discussed.

What to Prepare for First Contact

  1. First photograph the entire group. Keep any original boxes, paper sleeves, stamp albums, receipts and old labels.
  2. Then add front-and-back views of each item, plus the edge, base mark, hallmark, prefix or any damaged area.
  3. State the quantity, dimensions or weight. If you do not know an item's name, simply say so.
  4. We will respond to what is visible in the photographs and point out anything that still needs checking.

Different Collectibles Need Different Photographs

Silver dollars: Photograph both sides of each coin, then hold it upright and cover the entire edge in overlapping sections. Keep the date, province, denomination, portrait or dragon in focus. If you have household scales and callipers, record the weight and diameter, but do not use one reading alone to judge authenticity. Leave polished surfaces, chopmarks, holes, solder and filed edges as they are.

Older Renminbi: Full views of both sides, all four corners, the prefix and the watermark under transmitted light are most useful. Do not break up an original bundle or serial run; photograph the first and last serial numbers, seal, side and total quantity instead. Use raking light to record the paper if you see mildew spots, tears, tape, stuck notes or possible washing.

Porcelain: Begin with all four sides of the complete piece and its dimensions, then add the rim, neck and shoulder, body, foot rim, mark and decoration. Point out concealed cracks, chips, joins, filled glaze and overpainting. Do not force a large piece or one on a wooden stand upside down. If the stand is fixed, do not remove it merely to photograph the mark.

Gold: Record the whole item, every hallmark, the weight reading and all non-gold components together. Show the positions of stones, pearls, cords, mechanical clasps and other fittings. For bars and coins, also include the serial number, date, original box and receipt. Group different finenesses separately rather than combining them in one total weight.

Stamps: Photograph a stamp album page by page from the cover, keeping its original order and page numbers. For key items, add the catalogue number, perforations, sheet margin, cancellation and gum. Never pull apart material that is stuck from damp. Keep full sheets, blocks of four, first-day covers and postally used covers with their complete margins or covers.

What Photographs Can Show—and What Still Requires the Item

Clear photographs can identify the broad category, reveal dates and inscriptions, record visible damage and show what to photograph next. Paper stiffness, fine repairs, the depth of a coin's edge reeding, concealed porcelain cracks, mixed materials in gold jewellery, thinned stamps and gum tack may still be affected by lighting, angle and camera. A matching image online cannot establish the condition of the item in hand.

An initial response is limited to the information supplied; a distant photograph is neither proof of authenticity nor a fixed transaction term. If a key area is not visible, we will say what is missing before both sides decide whether to provide more photographs, take measurements or arrange a physical inspection. Before photographing, do not clean silver coins, press banknotes flat, scrub porcelain, scratch-test gold or remove stamps from their original album.
