Inspecting the decorative gold-foil gift without alteration
Construction and joins: Show the complete front and reverse, embossed design, all four edges, folds, seams and any lifted layer. Do not peel a corner or cut a sealed join to discover the construction for a photograph.
Dimensions and scale: Count separate sheets or panels, record overall dimensions and photograph the complete gross weight with the scale unit visible. If an independent metal weight cannot be established safely, leave it unknown rather than subtracting an estimated backing weight.
Separate materials: List card, glue, laminate, fabric, plastic, glass and frame components exactly where they occur. Keep packaging and certificates associated with the right gift, but do not treat either as evidence of metal fineness.
Where foil, backing and decoration meet
- Foil edges and folds:
- Use soft raking light to show wrinkles, tears, doubled edges and lifted corners. A fold can contain several layers, so thickness at one edge should not be generalised across the object.
- Embossed or printed design:
- Photograph the complete motif before close details of relief, ink, gilding or surface loss. Keep abrasion and later touch-up distinct from the original craft finish.
- Backing and enclosure: preserve the composite intact.
- Show how the metal layer meets card, adhesive, laminate or frame. If disassembly would damage the gift, preserve the construction and state that the metal-only weight is unavailable.
Do not dismantle the gift to create a net weight
Keep the object flat, dry and supported beneath the full backing. Avoid rubbing, solvent, tape or pressure on lifted foil, and store detached fragments in a labelled inert sleeve rather than reattaching them.
