Item details and appraisal notes

These pre-owned necklaces may differ in age, maker, repair history and fineness, and no numerical purity is supplied. Each chain should be treated as its own object from hallmark and clasp to length and scale reading.

Pre-owned gold necklaces: construction, fineness and weight

FeatureWhat to establish
Object typenecklace group
Structure to photographEach chain, clasp, jump ring, hallmark and visible repair.
Measurements and weightIndividual length, chain width and weight.
Separate componentsSeparate the necklaces by provenance group; list pendants and detachable fittings against the right necklace.
Purity boundaryLeave fineness open until the marks and suitable tests support it. Current value depends on the confirmed gold weight of each necklace and the reference gold price used on the appraisal date, not on a group average or an old receipt.

Inspecting the pre-owned gold necklaces without alteration

Construction and joins: Number every chain, then photograph its full length, clasp, jump rings, hallmark, solder points and visible repairs. Keep necklaces from different owners or boxes separated where their histories are not certain.

Dimensions and scale: Record individual length, chain width and gross weight with units visible. Do not combine several chains on one scale image unless separate readings and an explained total are also available.

Separate materials: Assign pendants and designed-to-detach fittings to the correct necklace. A replacement clasp or added charm should be identified without guessing its metal or subtracting an estimated weight.

Age and repair differences within the group

  • Hallmarks by chain: Photograph each mark with enough surrounding link or clasp detail to identify the necklace. Do not use a clearer mark from one chain for another.
  • Old repairs: Use raking light for solder, replaced links, stretched sections and polishing loss. A repair may affect both handling and the reliability of a gross-weight assumption.
  • Boxes and receipts: Keep paperwork with the correct necklace when the association is known. An old price or fitted box is provenance context, not a present fineness result.

Keep vintage chains untangled and separate

Store each necklace flat with its number and avoid ultrasonic cleaning, polishing or tension on a repaired link. A broken chain and its loose pieces should remain together without new solder or glue.

Pre-owned necklace handover guidance

For separate testing and weighing, review Gold and Jewellery with Gold Handover: Itemised Weights and Non-Gold Components. Repeat the sequence for every chain, including those that appear to match.

常見問題點擊展開答案

How should pre-owned gold necklaces be organised?

Give every chain a number and keep its full view, clasp, hallmark, repairs, dimensions, pendant and scale reading together. Separate uncertain ownership groups.

Can an old receipt establish current fineness or value?

No. It may support provenance, but fineness comes from the actual mark and appropriate testing. Current valuation uses confirmed gold content and the appraisal-date reference price.

Should repaired or broken chains be cleaned first?

No. Photograph solder, stretched links, polish loss and loose pieces as found. Keep weak chains flat and do not add glue or temporary wire.
