Silver Dollar Values Often Turn on Date, Die and Condition

A round, silver-coloured coin does not necessarily belong to one market. Yuan Shikai and Sun Yat-sen portrait coins, provincial dragon dollars, Japanese one-yen coins, British Trade Dollars and Morgan dollars each have their own dates and varieties. Identify the coin before seeking comparisons.

Dark colour does not mean a coin needs cleaning. Retain natural toning, old cabinet marks and circulation wear; polishing, filing an edge, filling a hole or recolouring the surface can conceal evidence needed for examination.

Use Two Identification Routes

Photograph These Six Areas

  1. The complete obverse, with the date and lettering in focus.
  2. The complete reverse, without cropping the portrait, dragon, wreath or emblem.
  3. The entire edge, photographed in overlapping sections if necessary.
  4. The weight shown on electronic scales and the measured diameter.
  5. Close-ups of chopmarks, cleaning, wear, holes, solder and knocks.
  6. The complete grading holder, original box, paper sleeve or provenance label.

A Short Edge Detail Is Not Enough

Edge patterns can differ by date, mint and variety even within the same coin type. Divide the circumference into four to six overlapping sections. If only the neatest area is shown, a filed edge, seam, local knock or trace of jewellery conversion may be missed. Record plain, reeded, lettered and smooth edges as they are, then compare them with the same date and denomination.

Struck edge reeding needs to be read alongside the lettering, fields and overall strike. An unusually smooth area, sudden narrowing, a change in tooth spacing or recut marks after soldering deserves a close-up. None is a conclusion by itself; each is a reason to inspect the coin in hand.

Compare Weight and Diameter with the Correct Coin

Household scales can provide an initial reading, but wear, deposits, an uneven weighing surface and decimal error can all change it. Yuan Shikai dollars, provincial dragon dollars, Japanese one-yen coins, British Trade Dollars and Morgan dollars do not share one standard. Identify the coin, date and denomination before choosing a specification. When measuring diameter, protect the edge from metal callipers with a soft sleeve.

Recognising Cleaning, Repair and Jewellery Conversion

Wiping often leaves parallel hairlines, while polishing makes both high and low areas shine. Chemical cleaning can leave an evenly coloured field with little natural depth. A filled hole, removed suspension loop, ground-off chopmark or recut edge may show a colour difference, uneven metal or interrupted detail. Raking light records these features better than frontal flash.

For a larger group, arrange the coins by design or date and place a number beside each one; do not stack them for one photograph. Suspected examples of the same variety may be compared in one frame, but each coin's obverse, reverse, edge and weight must carry the same number so details are not mixed up in the response.

Breaking Down the Information for Valuation

First identify the type of silver dollar, then compare coins of the same date and variety. Only after that should wear, toning, cleaning and damage be assessed. Weight or magnetism can be used for preliminary screening, but neither can establish authenticity alone. For a holdered coin, check the coin type and label against the item inside.
