Item details and appraisal notes
This pre-owned decorative ornament carries a pure-gold claim, yet its main form may be joined to a base, supports, cavities and removable elements. Gold, wood, plastic, stone and other materials must be mapped before the complete object's gross weight is discussed as metal weight.
Pre-owned gold ornament: construction, fineness and weight
| Feature | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Object type | decorative ornament |
| Structure to photograph | Main form, base, supports, joins, cavities and removable elements. |
| Measurements and weight | Separate dimensions and weights for the main body, base and accessories. |
| Separate components | Wood, plastic, stone and other support materials are conditional non-gold components to identify. |
| Purity boundary | Pure-gold wording is not a numerical fineness result and does not apply automatically to every component. Value can use only tested fineness and reliably established gold weight, with the appraisal-date reference price and confirmed support materials kept separate. |
Inspecting the pre-owned gold ornament without alteration
Construction and joins: Photograph the ornament from all sides, including the base, supports, joins, hollow areas and every removable element. Show dents, splits, adhesive, added solder and replacement pieces without dismantling a fixed assembly.
Dimensions and scale: Record overall dimensions and gross weight, then separate dimensions or weights for the gold body, base and accessories only where they can be identified and removed as designed. Do not create a net figure by guessed subtraction.
Separate materials: Identify wood, plastic, rubber, stone, fabric and other supports only when present. Keep a fitted base attached if removal would strain a join, and state that the metal-only weight remains unresolved.
Do not pull the ornament from its base
Support both the decorative body and base during movement. Avoid polishing, solvent, new adhesive or disassembly for weighing; a loose component should be padded and labelled in its current state.
Separating ornament, support and hidden construction
Main gold form: Show every face, hallmark, relief, seam and cavity opening under direct and raking light. Do not assume that a large body is solid.
Base and supports: Photograph attachment points from several angles and identify screws, adhesive, pins or solder where visible. Avoid twisting the ornament from its base.
Documents and repairs: Keep boxes, receipts and certificates with the object while treating them as context. Map old fills, replacement supports and later surface work separately.
Composite ornament weighing guidance
For material boundaries and handover, review Gold and Jewellery then use Gold Handover: Itemised Weights and Non-Gold Components. Preserve fixed joins while distinguishing confirmed gold from the support structure.
