Key points

Build the group from individual Yuan Shikai dollars

Put complete, raking-light and damage photographs in the image field, while keeping packaging and inherited descriptions elsewhere. If the accounts conflict, preserve both without completing the coin's lettering from a document.

Assign the number before recording portrait hair, epaulette, date characters and denticles. Use the same direction for obverse, reverse and circumference so another reviewer can repeat the sequence.

Record the entire edge, weight, diameter, instrument and unit in measurement. Confirm that the enclosure and the object have not exchanged numbers.

This method applies to the objects in hand; it does not preserve names, dates or transaction results from a case narrative.

Make the edge sequence continuous

Photograph overlapping edge sections for every dollar in the group. Note joins, filing, piercings, solder and former mounts without polishing or forcing a holder.

Use separate positions for toning, normal wear, weakly struck detail, wipe marks and unusual brightness. Finish the checklist before deciding whether closer inspection is needed.

Give every coin a complete pair of faces

Transcribe date, denomination and both face legends from the numbered coin before comparing its weight and diameter with a matching type.

Secure uncropped rims on both sides, then add portrait, shoulder, lettering, wreath, denticles and proposed variety details. A group photograph is only an inventory view.

Do not let patina obscure the record

Sort the numbered dollars by visible date and supported variety after their own portrait sides, reverses, edges and measurements are complete.

A grading holder remains a separate source. Its label and grade do not replace the visible date, variety markers or surface inside.

Know when direct access would add evidence

Old sleeves, countermarks and family accounts may be recorded as context. Identification still returns to portrait lettering, wreath, strike, surface and circumference.

Only use a signed, O, triangular-yuan or local-variety term when its described feature can be located on the relevant numbered coin.

Reconcile photographs, dimensions and limitations

For each Yuan Shikai dollar, image evidence comes first: whole faces, raking-light views and located damage. Date, denomination and face legends follow in the identification field.

Keep the continuous edge and instrument readings apart from countermarks, holes or repairs, although both groups must carry the same object number.

Describe condition by location, not with a broad phrase such as good for its age. A rim segment or damaged character must be findable in the photographs.

At handover, count every object, holder and paper against the list. Oral history stays background material and cannot be merged with visible coin features.

Before sending an enquiry, confirm that each close view, dimension and enclosure resolves to one Yuan Shikai dollar. Leave unconfirmed details for direct review.
