Fourth Series 100 Yuan must be separated into the 1980 and 1990 versions. People's Bank of China information states that the 1980 version was issued on 10 May 1988 and the 1990 version on 20 August 1992. Both measure 165 × 77 mm and both ceased circulation on 1 May 2018.
A physical attribution still depends on the printed year, complete front and reverse, prefix and printing details of each banknote. Do not transfer a security-thread, fluorescence or other security-feature statement between versions unless reliable official information and the object itself support that point.
Basic comparison of the 1980 and 1990 versions
The dates belong to different versions: 10 May 1988 is the issue date for the 1980 version, while 20 August 1992 is the issue date for the 1990 version. The shared facts are the 165 × 77 mm dimensions and the 1 May 2018 withdrawal date; they do not merge the two identities.
Give each banknote its own identifier and make uncropped images of both faces, all four corners, the printed year and any prefix or serial that is present. A side-by-side comparison should use the same neutral light, scale and labels while preserving each original image separately.
Keep attribution and condition in separate image groups
Printed year, prefix, serial and design details support version attribution. Folds, tears, pinholes, foxing, ink marks, water staining, pressing, washing and repairs describe condition. Consecutive numbers do not prove equal condition, and a flat surface does not rule out earlier treatment.
Do not apply bleach, heat, tape or adhesive film to either 100 Yuan banknote. If original packaging, a consecutive group, grading holder or album survives, photograph its complete order and labels before storage. Leave damp or adhering protective material in place rather than forcing it open.
Preserve an untouched image set
Keep colour-accurate, unsharpened and uncropped originals, then make separate reading copies if needed. If a banknote is later removed from a sleeve, holder or old packaging, photograph the state before and after and note the date. Resizing a copy must not alter tone, proportions or physical detail.
