Item details and appraisal notes

This cylindrical brush pot is associated with the Chongzhen period and a blue-and-white Zhang Xian child-bestowing story. Its continuous figure scene, cobalt brushwork, mouth, straight wall, recessed base and any inscription need to be read together before a Ming date is supported.

Chongzhen Zhang Xian brush pot: form and story

Evidence boundaryChongzhen wording remains provisional until the brush-pot form, ceramic body, blue-and-white technique, narrative painting, base, firing and provenance agree.

Following the Zhang Xian story around the cylinder

Profile and proportions: Take level views around the full cylindrical wall, then photograph the mouth, interior and recessed base squarely. Measure height, mouth diameter and base diameter without allowing perspective to taper the sides.

Glaze, colour and design: Use overlapping images to follow Zhang Xian, attendants, children, gestures, landscape and border elements in their actual order. Show cobalt outlines, washes, darker accents, bleeding, later strengthening and abrasion under consistent light.

Foot, mark and condition: Include the complete rim, lower edge, recessed underside, exposed body and any mark or label. Map mouth chips, vertical hairlines, base losses, filled cracks, joins and retouched painting to numbered full-wall views.

Supporting the brush pot without stressing the rim

Move the brush pot with one hand beneath the base and the other around the lower wall. Do not lift by the mouth, place pressure on a hairline or use liquid cleaning on the cobalt and glaze.

Narrative, cobalt and cylindrical construction

Figure sequence: Keep each figure and gesture connected to the next scene. If abrasion obscures an attribute or child, state the loss instead of completing the story from another brush pot.

Cylinder and mouth: Photograph the mouth and wall from several level positions to reveal distortion, firing movement or later grinding. A repaired vertical crack should be shown under two light directions.

Recessed base: Take one uncropped underside view before enlarging body texture, glaze edge or inscriptions. Old labels and kiln contact should remain in place unless removal is already safe and documented.

Blue-and-white narrative ware guidance

For handling and image order, open Antique Porcelain then keep Old Porcelain: Body, Glaze, Marks and Firing Traces. Use them to protect the ceramic while the Chongzhen question is tested on this brush pot.

Questions sellers often askOpen a question to read the answer

How should the Zhang Xian story be photographed?

Use overlapping level views around the cylinder so figures, gestures, children, landscape and borders stay in sequence. Leave abraded or hidden attributes unresolved.

Which measurements suit the brush pot?

Record height, mouth diameter and base diameter with the contact points visible. Square mouth and underside views help show whether the cylindrical wall is distorted.

Does the Chongzhen wording confirm a Ming date?

No. The date must be supported by brush-pot form, body, cobalt painting, glaze, recessed base, firing traces and provenance considered together.
