Reading the coin from its inscriptions outward
Legends and design: Begin with square-on images of both faces. The 1908 date, Central Mint inscription, Guangxu Yuanbao characters and Kuping denomination must be legible on the coin itself; photograph any old holder or label separately.
Measurements and edge: Add a continuous edge sequence under the same light, followed by close views of the legends, dragon, denticles and struck detail. Record weight, diameter and thickness with the tool, unit and measuring point shown.
Surface and damage: Use neutral and raking light to show toning, oxidation, wear, contact marks, rim knocks, chopmarks, distortion and old cleaning. Hold the coin only by its edge; metal polish, abrasive paste, toothpaste and brushes can permanently remove evidence.
