Beginning with the unidentified form
Profile and proportions: Set the object upright on a stable surface and photograph its full outline from at least four angles. Add the mouth, interior and base, then choose measurements that fit the actual form rather than assuming it is a bowl, vase or dish.
Glaze, colour and design: Show the surface in neutral and raking light so glaze colour, thickness, crackle, pooling, pinholes, wear and later coating can be distinguished. If decoration is present, follow it completely; if the surface is plain, do not import a motif from a comparison.
Foot, mark and condition: The underside should include the entire foot, exposed body, trimming, kiln contact and glaze boundary. Any inscription, label, chip, join or filled area needs an uncropped position view before close study.
