Finding the form before testing the period
Profile and proportions: Photograph the whole object from several level directions, then show the mouth, interior and base. Select height, width, rim or foot measurements only after the vessel type and its complete edges are clear.
Glaze, colour and design: Use neutral light for real glaze colour and raking light for thickness, pooling, crackle, pinholes, wear or later coating. If decoration appears, follow it continuously; a plain area should remain plain rather than receive a borrowed motif.
Foot, mark and condition: Show the full foot, exposed fabric, trimming, kiln contact and glaze termination without scraping. Locate chips, hairlines, grinding, fills, joins and replacement sections on the complete profile.
