[Ancient Gold Appraisal] Buying and selling Republic of China Year 22 Sun Yat-sen silver coins - One Yuan (boat coin)
The "Boat Dollar" series of silver coins are Sun Yat-sen portrait silver coins issued during the Republic of China period, named for the sailboat design on the reverse. Issued from 1933 until the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, these coins circulated widely. The "Boat Dollar" series has numerous variations; the following are some of the main variations and their characteristics:
1. Republic of China Year 21 (1932) One Dollar with a Sailing Ship: The obverse features a profile portrait of Sun Yat-sen, with the inscription "Republic of China Year 21" around the outer rim. The reverse features a sailing ship in the center, with waves engraved below the ship, symbolizing the Republic of China sailing through storms and representing the nation's direction. It is an early version in the series of sailing ship silver coins, relatively rare, and minted in limited quantities.
2. 1933 (Republic of China Year 22) One Yuan Dollar with a Sailing Ship: It still features a profile portrait of Sun Yat-sen, with relatively simple lettering. The sailing ship design on the reverse is similar to the previous year, but the details are more refined. The ship symbolizes the nation's stable progress. Due to its early issuance year, it has high collectible value, and its circulation in the market is limited.
3. 1934 (Republic of China Year 23) One Yuan Dollar with a Sailing Ship: The obverse still features Sun Yat-sen's portrait, with the inscription "Republic of China Year 23" around the outer ring. The reverse retains the sailing ship as the main image, but the relief is stronger and the design is more delicate. Compared to the 1933 (Republic of China Year 22) sailing ship, there are no significant changes in appearance. Due to fluctuations in international silver prices, the mintage of this version was reduced, making it highly valuable to collectors.
4. Republic of China 24th Year (1935) One Yuan Sailing Ship Pattern Coin: The obverse features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, with no significant difference from previous versions. The reverse features a sailing ship design, maintaining the overall design consistency. Due to a sharp rise in international silver prices, fewer sailing ship silver coins were issued in this year, making it a rare variety later on.
5. Republic of China Year 25 (1936) One Dollar with a Sailing Ship: The obverse still features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, with the inscription "Republic of China Year 25" around the edge. The reverse features the same sailing ship design as previous versions, but the diameter and weight of the silver coin issued this year were reduced. This year's reduction in silver content and weight resulted in two styles: the "large sailing ship dollar" and the "small sailing ship dollar," making them more valuable to collectors.
6. Small Boat Dollar (after 1936): The obverse features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, and the reverse depicts a sailboat, but the diameter and weight have decreased. Because of their larger mintage, these silver coins are less valuable than the earlier Large Boat Dollars, but they remain an important collectible.
7. Double Flag Sailboat Version: The obverse of the silver coin features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, with the words "Republic of China" inscribed around the outer rim. The reverse, in addition to the sailboat, incorporates two flags, symbolizing national authority and unity. This version is relatively rare and is considered one of the rarer varieties.
8. Sun Yat-sen Commemorative Coin (Circulating Coin): Obverse features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen. Reverse features a sailboat design, slightly different from earlier versions. It was issued in relatively large quantities. Due to its later minting date and larger issuance volume, its market value is slightly lower than other rarer versions.
