Item details and appraisal notes
This 1949 5,000 Yuan note carries the Cultivator subject. Begin with colour-accurate photographs of both faces, keeping the value, date, border and all four corners visible. Prefix, serial, paper condition and any watermark that is actually present should be shown as separate evidence, never inferred from the denomination alone.

Photographs that establish identity and condition
Whole-note views: Place the front and back at the same scale and under the same neutral light. The Cultivator vignette, 5,000 Yuan value and 1949 date should be readable without cropping the border. Add a second image only when a faint inscription or design detail needs closer inspection.
Numbering and close details: Photograph the complete prefix and serial number in natural colour, with enough surrounding paper to show their position. Include all cut edges and corners before enlarging a doubtful digit. If one character is faint, leave it unresolved rather than sharpening or copying it from another note.
Condition mapping: Show folds, foxing, pinholes, tears, water staining, pressing, backing or earlier repairs on the side where each occurs. Pair every close-up with an uncropped locator image. Condition evidence should not be mixed with the question of exact type.
Paper, storage and accompanying records
Material kept with the note: An album, sleeve, grading holder, certificate or family note is useful only when it still accompanies the banknote. Photograph each item separately, then once beside the note; its wording may add context but does not prove variety or condition.
Paper and print: Use neutral light for paper tone and ink colour, and soft raking light for folds or surface disturbance. Transmitted light is appropriate only when it reveals an observable paper feature, such as a watermark, thin area or repair. Do not describe a watermark when none can be seen.
Leave the note untreated: Keep the paper dry, flat and free of new tape. Washing, pressing, bleaching or corner filling can remove or conceal evidence needed for an in-hand examination. Photograph any earlier treatment before deciding whether specialist conservation advice is necessary.
A safe sequence before appraisal
Take the overall front and back first, followed by corners, edges, prefix, serial and condition details. Keep each file at natural colour and place multiple banknotes in separate image groups. After photography, return the note to an inert sleeve away from heat, moisture and direct light.
