Keeping individual pieces distinguishable
Group view: Begin with one clear image showing the total count and original order. Then photograph each grain or bean from several angles, including any stamp, indentation, cut or drilled area. Do not add jewellery-part terminology to these loose gold pieces.
Individual and total weights: Number the pieces, weigh them one by one, and finish with the combined total. Keep the scale unit visible and remove pouches, cards and other packaging from every reading.
Surface and provenance: Leave scratches, dents, deformation, cuts, holes and later polishing as found. If pieces came from different sources, keep the groups apart. Photograph any receipt, box or pouch separately so its weight and wording cannot be confused with the gold.
Three checks before applying a gold price
- Fineness: Photograph any stamp and note which piece carries it, then use appropriate testing. Colour, shape and a 999 mark are not conclusive on their own.
- Measured weight: Show each individual reading and the combined total with the unit visible. Reconcile the total with the number of pieces before valuation.
- Paperwork and packaging: A receipt, certificate or original box may add provenance but does not replace testing. Exclude every pouch, card and container from the gold weight.
