1914 (Year 3 of the Republic of China) Yuan Datou Common Varieties and Collection Value

Many collectors, when inquiring about the 1914 Yuan Datou acquisition price, often overlook the huge impact of "variety" on value. Due to the numerous mints (such as the Tianjin Mint General Factory and various provincial branches), the Yuan Shikai silver dollar minted in Year 3 of the Republic of China produced a rich array of varieties. Below is a compilation of common Yuan Datou varieties from Year 3 of the Republic of China to help you initially assess the rarity of your collection:

Variety Name Coin Feature Description Collection Value / Rarity Assessment
Standard Edition (Common Edition) Yuan's profile, upright lettering, plump ears of grain. The most common circulating variety on the market. ★★★☆☆ (High market demand, stable price)
O-version / O-version Triangular Circle A tiny hidden"O"mark near the ribbon knot of the ears of grain on the reverse or within the floral leaf on the right. The character"Bei"(bei) within the character"Yuan "(yuan) appears triangular. ★★★★☆ (Highly sought after by variety enthusiasts, higher than the common edition)
Gansu Edition Yuan's image is slightly rough, the lines of the medal on his chest are shallower, and some have the characters"Gan Su"(Gansu) minted on the left and right of Yuan's image on the obverse. ★★★★☆ (Distinct regional features, those with "Gansu" characters are highly valuable)
Raised Hua / Missing Stroke Zao The grass head of the character"Hua"(hua) in"Zhong Hua Republic of China San Year"(Republic of China Year 3) on the obverse is significantly raised; or the mouth part of the character"Zao"(zao) is missing a stroke. ★★★★☆ (Strong detailed interest, less circulated in the market)
English Signature Edition (L.GIORGI) The Latin initials "L.GIORGI" of Italian engraver Luigi Giorgi are engraved on the right side of Yuan's portrait. ★★★★★ (Trial strike specimen, extremely rare, possesses top auction value)

Piece-by-Piece Identification: How to Authenticate Yuan Shikai Silver Dollars?

Before old coinBuyback or silver dollar trading, confirming authenticity is the first step. We offer free online ancient coin appraisal services. You can also use the following basic methods to authenticate Yuan Shikai silver dollars:

  1. Listen to the Sound (Aural Authentication): When a genuine old silver dollar is lightly tapped, it produces a clear, long, and mellow sound; fakes (mostly made of alloy or copper-lead) often produce a harsh, short, or dull sound.
  2. Weigh the Coin (Standard Weight): A standard "Kuping 7 mace 2 candareens" one-yuan silver dollar from 1914 had a historical standard weight of approximately 26.6 to 26.8 grams. After a hundred years of circulation, there might be slight wear, but the weight deviation should not be too large.
  3. Examine the Patina (Traces of Time): Genuine coins, after a hundred years of accumulation, will develop a natural, layered oxidation layer (patina) on their surface, such as black lacquer patina or colorful patina; forged "chemical patina" usually floats on the surface and has a very unnatural color.
  4. Observe the Reeded Edge (Minting Craftsmanship): The reeded edges of official old silver dollars (such as straight reeding, olive reeding, or eagle reeding) are cleanly cut and consistent in depth; fake coin edges are often rough, have file marks on the edges, or are too sharp.

Transparent Quotation: Grading Standards Affecting the Acquisition Price of Old Silver Dollars

Where in Hong Kong offers high prices for old coin Buyback? Gujin Jianbao adheres to honest quotations. In addition to variety, silver dollar condition grading standards are the core factor in determining the final old coin acquisition price. We refer to the standards of international authoritative grading agencies (PCGS / NGC) to provide you with an appraisal:

Condition Grade (Reference) Appearance Feature Description Impact on Acquisition Price
Uncirculated / About Uncirculated (MS / AU) Coin surface retains original mint luster (original light), pattern details (such as hair, medals, ears of grain) are clear and unworn, no nicks. Highest price acquisition (Highly investment and collection potential)
Extremely Fine / Very Fine (XF / VF) After market circulation, high points (such as cheekbones, hair edges) have slight to moderate wear, but the overall pattern is still complete and clear, with natural patina. High price acquisition (Most actively traded condition in the market)
Fine / Heavily Worn (F / VG) Long-term circulation has led to significant smoothing of the pattern, with many details of text and grain leaves lost, but the overall year and variety are still identifiable. Standard market price acquisition (Suitable for entry-level collection)
Poor / Physical Damage (Details / Chop Marks) Coin surface has deep scratches, holes, private chop marks, severe cleaning marks (cleaned coins), or severely damaged edges. Discounted acquisition (Assessed based on actual silver content and remaining details)

What is Yuan Datou?

It was one of the main currencies in circulation during the Republic of China period. "Yuan Datou" is the common name for the Yuan Shikai coin series. To be precise, it is called "Yuan Shikai Portrait with Jiahe Silver Coin". In February of the third year of the Republic of China, to rectify the currency system and standardize silver coins, Article 13 of the "National Currency Regulations" was promulgated, deciding to implement a silver standard system. The "National Currency Regulations" stipulated: "'The unit of value shall be 6 mace and 4.8 candareens of pure silver, named Yuan'; 'One-yuan silver coin, with a total weight of 7 mace and 2 candareens, 89% silver, 11% copper', 'one-yuan silver coins shall be used without limit', meaning that a one-yuan silver coin was the standard currency with unlimited legal tender. According to this regulation, in December 1914 and February 1915, the General Mint and the Jiangnan Mint successively minted a circular silver coin with Yuan Shikai's head engraved on the coin face, commonly known as Yuan Tou Coin or Yuan Datou."

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How large is the price difference between various versions of Yuan Shikai coins?

A: The price difference between different sub-versions of Yuan Shikai coins (such as large character versions, small character versions, and versions from different mints) can range from several times to dozens of times, due to varying quantities in existence. Gujin Jianbao masters have a complete database of versions and can compare and appraise on the spot.

Q: Are there distinctions between “fake patina on real silver” and “real patina on fake silver” for Yuan Shikai coins?

A: In Yuan Shikai counterfeits, it's common to find fake patinas used to deceive novices. Gujin Jianbao verifies through multiple checks, including luster and texture, patina layers, adhesion, and details of the underlying patterns. Our masters have extensive experience in identification.

A: Gujin Jianbao handles Yuan Shikai coins regardless of their origin, focusing solely on the physical object and its authenticity. Client privacy is maintained, but we advise clients to independently confirm the legal source of their Yuan Shikai coins to avoid future disputes.
