Item details and appraisal notes

A gold bar is assessed through the bar itself: its fineness mark, refinery or issuer details, serial number, stated weight, measured weight, dimensions and packaging. The words “pure gold” must agree with the physical markings and appropriate testing rather than being treated as a substitute for them.

Keep stated weight, measured weight and confirmed gold weight distinct. A valuation can use the appraisal-date reference gold price only after fineness and actual gold content are established; cards, pouches, certificates and boxes are not gold weight.

Gold bar: marks, weight and identity

FeatureWhat the bar should show
Fineness claimPhotograph the fineness inscription exactly as it appears on the bar. The words “pure gold” still require agreement between the physical mark and appropriate testing.
Weight and dimensionsRecord length, width, thickness and the scale reading with units visible. Compare the measured weight with the weight struck or printed on the bar, but do not describe a discrepancy as fraud before the bar and packaging can be examined.
Issuer and serial detailsTake one uncropped face view before enlarging the fineness, issuer, weight and serial inscriptions. Transcribe only characters that remain legible on this bar.
Certificate and packagingFor a sealed bar, show the complete card, all closures, labels, barcode and visible numbers before considering any opening. Match a certificate to the exact serial-numbered bar and keep the outer case outside the measured bar weight.
Faces and edgesPhotograph both faces and every edge under direct and raking light. Include logos, specification text, serial numbers, casting or minted surfaces, corner damage and any drilled, soldered or altered area without polishing it.

From refinery mark to sealed edge

Place the measuring tool beside each edge without obscuring text, then photograph the scale at rest. A loose bar and a sealed pack should never share one unexplained gross weight.

Handle a loose bar over a clean padded surface and avoid rubbing fingerprints or scratches away. Keep certificates, invoices and packaging with the matching serial number, while stating plainly when their association is uncertain.

Number several bars individually and pair each front, reverse, serial number, scale image and package with the correct bar. Never apply one certificate or test result across a group without a physical match.

Gold bar documentation and weighing

For testing and handover context, open Gold and Jewellery then consult Gold Inspection and Handover: Contact, Weighing and Fineness. For a small loose-gold comparison, see 999 Pure Gold Grains and Gold Beans; coin-shaped gold is handled separately as a Gold Coin. To review the marks, serial number, dimensions, scale reading and sealed edges, contact About Gu Jin Jian Bao | Collection Enquiries. Share both faces and packaging views through WhatsApp 9834 2057; alternatively, call +852 9834 2057. Quote “pure gold bar” and state whether the bar is loose or remains in an intact pack.

Which details should be shown on a pure gold bar?

Photograph both faces, every edge, fineness and weight marks, refinery or issuer name, serial number and any sealed packaging. The words “pure gold” still require support from the bar and appropriate testing.

How should stated and measured bar weights be handled?

Keep them separate. Photograph the struck or printed weight, then record the scale reading with its unit visible and with cards, pouches, certificates and boxes excluded from the bar weight.

Should sealed packaging be opened for photographs?

Not for photographs alone. First document the front, back, every closure, labels and matching numbers. Describe the pack as sealed only where its complete edges can be checked.
