Item details and appraisal notes

This 1949 20 Yuan banknote is identified by its Overpass subject, printed value and date. A useful first image shows the entire front without clipped corners, followed by the reverse at the same scale. Numbering, paper condition and any visible paper feature then need their own close photographs so that identification is not confused with grade.

What should agree before the type is narrowed

FeatureDirect reading
SeriesGrouped with First Series Renminbi; check that reading against both printed faces.

Denomination20 Yuan
Main subjectOverpass
Identification checkKeep the subject beside the value and date area. A close crop or an old holder label is not enough.

Build the image set from the whole note outward

Complete faces and subject: Photograph both sides square to the camera, with a narrow clear border around every edge. Keep the Overpass scene, 20 Yuan value and 1949 date legible in the wider views. A detail image should always be easy to locate on one of those complete photographs.

Prefix, serial and edge detail: Show any prefix and the full serial in one natural-colour frame before moving closer to an uncertain digit. Add the four corners and cut edges, because trimming, splits or missing paper can affect condition. Do not reconstruct characters with contrast or sharpening.

Wear, staining and repairs: Locate folds, foxing, pinholes, water staining, tears, pressing, backing and repaired areas on the correct face. Use a second light direction when surface texture is hard to read. Show only what is visible and leave grade for an in-hand assessment.

A practical image checklist

CheckWhat a useful photograph shows
Complete facesFront and back at the same scale, with the subject, denomination, date, border and all corners visible.
NumberingThe full prefix and serial with nearby paper; any obscured or faint character is left unresolved.
Paper conditionFolds, stains, edge damage, thinning and repairs shown first in place, then in a close view if needed.

Handling and temporary storage

Place the banknote on a clean, dry, non-reflective support and move it as little as possible. If a watermark is actually visible, photograph it separately in transmitted light; do not turn the lighting method into a claim. Keep water staining, if present, under neutral light as condition evidence. Washing, pressing, tape and heat should be avoided.

Series context and photography guidance

The First Series Renminbi gives the wider series context; the First Series Renminbi: Denominations, Designs and Evidence helps separate denomination, design and condition evidence. Return to the printed note for the final identification.

常見問題點擊展開答案

What confirms the 1949 20 Yuan Overpass type?

The Overpass subject must appear with the printed 20 Yuan value and 1949 date in a full-face photograph. The reverse, border and inscriptions should support the same identification.

How should the prefix and serial be photographed?

Show the entire number line at natural colour, with enough surrounding paper to locate it. Add a close view only for a doubtful character, and do not digitally complete a faint digit.

How are a watermark and water staining recorded differently?

A visible watermark is photographed in transmitted light as a paper feature. Water staining is condition damage and should be shown under neutral light on the complete affected side; neither should be assumed when absent.
