Item details and appraisal notes
This 1949 First Series Renminbi Red Ship 100 Yuan note should be checked from the full printed note rather than from colour alone. Photograph the front with the ship subject, 100 Yuan value, date and complete border in one frame, followed by the reverse at matching scale. Numbering, paper tone and condition then need separate images made without cleaning or flattening the banknote.
Red Ship 100 Yuan: evidence visible on the whole note
| Identity point | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Series | First Series Renminbi |
| Date | 1949 |
| Printed denomination | 100 Yuan |
| Named design | Red Ship |
| First boundary | The subject, value and date support the broad identity. Colour by itself does not establish a subtype, paper variety or grade. |
Photograph design, numbering and condition in order
Full design view: Use neutral, even light and leave every corner and cut edge inside the frame. Keep the Red Ship subject beside the 100 Yuan inscription and 1949 date before enlarging any part of the design. The reverse should be photographed at the same scale so both faces can be compared.
Numbering and smaller print: Show any prefix and complete serial actually present with enough surrounding paper to locate them. Preserve natural contrast and spacing; a second view may clarify a faint digit, but it should not invent a missing stroke. Include nearby inscriptions when they can be read.
Paper and condition: Place folds, foxing, pinholes, water staining, tears, trimming, pressing, backing, tape or repair on the correct side. Photograph each affected face before making a close detail. Raking light can reveal texture, while neutral light preserves an honest colour reading.
Preserve the evidence and associated material
- Condition traces: Keep stains, old cleaning, pressing and repaired areas exactly as found. The Red Ship 100 Yuan note should not be washed, ironed, bleached, taped or digitally recoloured before examination.
- Material kept with the note: If an album page, sleeve, envelope, certificate or grading holder survives, photograph it separately and once beside the banknote. A handwritten label may add provenance context, but it cannot determine variety or condition.
- Paper features: Use transmitted light only when an actual watermark, thin area or repair is visible, and keep enough border in the frame to show its position. Water staining is condition evidence under neutral light and must not be converted into a watermark claim.
A safe order for photography and storage
Take the uncropped front and reverse first, then the number line, corners, edges and visible condition details. Work over a clean dry support and move the paper as little as possible. Afterward, place it in an inert sleeve away from direct light, heat and moisture without forcing any fold flat.
Series context and a method for comparison
Read the First Series Renminbi for nearby issues, then use the First Series Renminbi: Denominations, Designs and Evidence to organise photographs. The physical date, denomination, subject and paper remain the controlling evidence.
