Item details and appraisal notes

The 1949 First Series Renminbi Train 20 Yuan note should be recorded independently from the Train 10 Yuan and the train design with no stated denomination. Begin with both complete faces, keeping the 20 Yuan value, date, train subject and border in the same front image. Any visible prefix, serial and paper feature should follow without being inferred from those neighbouring designs.

Separation ruleThe Train 20 Yuan combination must be established on this note. Train designs at other values cannot complete its details.

Take complete design photographs before small details

Front and reverse pair: Use square-on images at the same scale with all corners and cut edges visible. Keep the Train 20 Yuan design, 1949 date and denomination readable in the uncropped front. Add an enlarged view only when its position can be found on that first image.

Numbering and print: Photograph any prefix and serial actually present with natural colour, spacing and surrounding paper. A second light direction may clarify weak ink, but sharpening must not replace a missing stroke. Leave an uncertain character unresolved.

Condition and paper edges: Locate folds, foxing, pinholes, water staining, tears, trimming, pressing, backing and repairs on the correct face. Neutral light records tone and soft raking light can reveal texture. Show damage in place before moving closer.

Leave the banknote unchanged while photographing it

Work on a clean, dry, non-reflective surface and turn the paper only as needed. Keep washing, ironing, bleach, pressure and fresh tape out of the process. Use transmitted light solely when a watermark, thin spot or repair is actually visible, then return the note to an inert sleeve without forcing old folds flat.

Three checks after the complete faces

Resources for denomination and design context

The First Series Renminbi shows nearby issues, and the First Series Renminbi: Denominations, Designs and Evidence provides a comparison method. The printed 20 Yuan note remains the controlling evidence.

Share the complete faces and any readable serial through the About Gu Jin Jian Bao | Collection Enquiries; send a close image of wear through WhatsApp at +852 9834 2057, or telephone +852 9834 2057. Mention whether an album, sleeve or certificate still accompanies the banknote.

常見問題點擊展開答案

What distinguishes the 1949 Train 20 Yuan note?

The Train 20 Yuan subject must remain beside the printed denomination and 1949 date on the complete face. Do not infer its details from Train notes at 10 Yuan or an unstated value.

How is a covered serial position recorded?

Show the entire visible number line and its location, then state which position is hidden by wear, damage or an old mount. Digital completion should not be used.

Can a water stain be described as a watermark?

No. Water staining is condition damage under neutral light. Mention a watermark only when it is actually visible and can be photographed with transmitted light.
